The 2025 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß EGL scholarship covers all billable 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß expenses (full tuition, room, and board) for two international students who will need a non-immigrant visa (preferably an F-1 or J-1 student visa) to study in the United States. The scholarship does not cover non-billable expenses such as mandatory health insurance, books, airline tickets, taxes, and miscellaneous expenses which students will need to pay out of pocketÌý(approximately US$4,000 per year).
The 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß EGL scholarship is renewable for a total of four years of undergraduate study, based on continued satisfactory academic performance.ÌýStudents interested in all majors offered at 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß are eligible to apply.
New:Ìý17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß EGL partial scholarships! We’re excited to share that in addition to the two full 2025 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß Emerging Global Leader Scholarships covering all billable expenses, 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß will also offer up to eight additional generous 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß EGL partial scholarships valued at up to US$40,000/per year.
No additional application process is needed to be eligible for 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß EGL partial scholarships. Partial scholarship candidates will be selected from talented applicants who completeÌýthe 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß EGL scholarship process successfully. If you are recommended for an 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß EGLs partial scholarship, you will need to submit proof of additional funds beyond the initial US$4,000 for the difference not covered by the 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß EGLS partial scholarship. For example,Ìýif you are offered US$40,000/year, you will need to submit financial documents confirming US$42,000 on account for your first year instead of the full estimated costs of US$81,620.
You are NOT eligible to apply if:
- You are a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident,ÌýU.S. pending permanent resident, or dual citizen of the U.S. and another country.
- You are enrolled in or have already begun any post-secondary studies at another university in your home country or the United States.
- You graduated secondary school earlier than 2023.
IMPORTANT: The 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß Emerging Global Leadership Scholarship application process involves two steps:
- Step 1: Applicants who wish to be considered for 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß EGLS full or partial scholarships must first submit their Common or Coalition application and all supporting documents before December 1, 2024.
- Step 2: Submit the 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß EGL Scholarship application and essays via your applicant portal byÌýthe required December 1, 2024 special program deadline. You must complete Step 1 before submitting the 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß EGLS application. Late applications will not be considered.
17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß Emerging Leader Scholarship applicants should apply Regular DecisionÌýfor fall 2025 (not Early Decision ED or Early Action EA) and will be notified by April 1st, 2025.
Preference will be given to:
- International students who have overcome various obstacles and challenges as well as those from diverse and underrepresented global and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- A minimum 3.8 GPA equivalent out of 4.0 GPA (or in the top 10% of graduating class) for 9th-12th grades.
- A demonstrated commitment to leadership, volunteerism, community service, and to advancing the needs of people in their home country.
- Students with one of the following:
- 95+ TOEFL iBT (all subscores must be 20 or above)
- Sub-scores of 24+ on the paper-based TOEFL (Taken after May 31, 2017)
- 7.0+ IELTS (all subscores must be 6.0 or above)
- 33 minimum SAT Reading subscore
- Score of 630 or higher on the SAT Digital version section entitled "Evidence-Based Reading and Writing" (EBRW) as of March 2023
- 29 minimum ACT English
- 65 minimum PTE
- 125+ Duolingo (all subscores must be 115Ìýor above)
- Cambridge Assessment English score of 185Ìýor higher. Each sub-score must be 169 or higher.
- Students who are still enrolled in secondary/high school and graduating by June 2025.
- Important: Students in the IB system should plan to graduate with a full IB diploma with at leastÌý3 HL subjects. Students studying in the British A-Levels system must complete at least 3 A levels and finish 13 years of study before August 2025.
The 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß Emerging Global Leader Scholarship InstructionsÌý
- Complete and submit the Common Application or Coalition Application with all required documents per the 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß international instructions checklistÌýbefore December 1, 2024.
- Create your applicant portal when invited to do so.Ìý
- Submit a bank letter and the completed and signed 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß Declaration of Finances Form (17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß DFF),Ìýeach confirming a minimum of US$4,000. These can be uploaded via your applicant portal. SeeÌýexamples of bank letters.
- Submit your official TOEFL,ÌýIELTS,ÌýDuolingo English, PTE, or Cambridge Assessment EnglishÌýTest score results before December 1, 2024. Please have official English proficiency score reports sent directlyÌýby the testing agency to 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß, Undergraduate Admissions, Washington, District of Columbia. Note: Students cannot submit their own results.
- Students who do not submit a complete application packet with all supporting documents by the December 1Ìýdeadline will not be reviewed.
- If you are applying through a program supported by Ìýor if you are a past FLEX or YES high school scholarship recipient from the U.S. Department of State, please provide a letter from your EducationUSA center's adviser confirming your candidacy. You may request for the letter to be sent to levinson@american.edu as a PDF.
- If you are not selected as one of the finalists, you may still be considered for admission to 17³Ô¹ÏÔÚÏß, Washington, DC and eligible for partial merit scholarships. However, to continue the application process, you will need to submit proof of funds totaling up toÌýUS$81,620Ìý(estimated costs for first year of study).
